A Delhi court has ordered the framing of attempt to murder charges against two men accused in the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The incident occurred at a public event in August this year. According to the prosecution, Sakriya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai and Tahsin Raza Rafiullah Shaikh hatched a conspiracy to attack the chief minister. Khimjibhai, a 41-year-old resident of Rajkot in Gujarat, was arrested and booked under attempt to murder and other charges. Shaikh allegedly transferred ₹2,000 to Khimjibhai's account to plan the attack. The court found that the two men had been communicating on the phone before the attack and that Khimjibhai had sent clips of the public hearing to Shaikh. This, the court said, prima facie showed a criminal conspiracy between the two to attack the chief minister. The court also noted that the accused had managed to breach the security ring around the chief minister, who is an elected representative of the state. The attack was described as a 'well-planned conspiracy to kill her'. In addition to the attempt to murder charge, the court also framed charges against Khimjibhai for voluntarily causing hurt to another person who tried to save the chief minister. The Delhi Police filed a 400-page chargesheet against the two accused under various offences, including attempt to murder, assaulting and obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty, and criminal conspiracy. The matter has been posted for formal framing of charges on December 26.
