A Delhi court has acquitted five men accused of arson, rioting, and vandalism in the 2020 Delhi riots. The Additional Sessions Judge, Parveen Singh, ruled that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The accused men, Abdul Sattar, Muhammad Khalid, Hunain, Tanvir, and Arif, were charged with rioting, unlawful assembly, and vandalism in the Chand Bagh area. The judge questioned the credibility of key witnesses, including Ramdass Gupta, who claimed to have identified the accused men from photos. However, the origin of the photos was unclear. The court also pointed out inconsistencies in the complainant's account of being attacked at a petrol pump. The complainant's father found him injured at a different location, casting doubt on the incident. The five men were arrested after a complaint was lodged over stone pelting and arson in northeast Delhi's Chand Bagh area in February 2020. They were charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those dealing with rioting, unlawful assembly, and arson. The acquittal of the five men raises questions about the investigation and the reliability of eyewitness testimony.
