A massive fire ravaged the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, on the night of Saturday to Sunday, claiming the lives of at least 25 people, including tourists and staff members. The incident occurred when a series of LPG cylinder explosions sparked a massive blaze at around midnight, rapidly spreading throughout the club due to the presence of highly combustible materials. According to preliminary findings, most of those who lost their lives were staff members working in the basement, who were trapped and succumbed to smoke inhalation. Three people died from burn injuries sustained in the explosion. Six individuals were injured in the incident, and their treatment is ongoing. An investigation by the police and fire department is underway to determine the cause of the fire. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and announced an inquiry into the incident. The probe will examine whether the club adhered to fire safety norms and building regulations. Local MLA Michael Lobo has called for a safety audit of all clubs and restaurants, particularly those with air-conditioned spaces, following this tragic incident. The Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub had been operating despite a demolition notice from the local village panchayat and the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority. However, the notice was stayed by the Directorate of Panchayats, allowing the club to continue operating.
