Dhanbad DC Orders Urgent Valuation of Properties in Fire-Prone Areas

In a bid to expedite the rehabilitation of residents in fire-prone zones, Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner Aditya Ranjan has directed the Jharkhand Rehabilitation Development Authority to assess the valuation of land and properties owned by legal title holders within the next 10 days. The order comes after the completion of verification of legal title holders in five coal mine areas, including Putki Balihari, Eastern Jharia, and Kusunda. According to a 2019 survey, approximately 1,40,946 families reside in 595 mine fire zones within the Jharia Coalfield of BCCL. Among them, 32,064 are legal title holders, while 72,882 are unauthorized residents. The valuation of properties will determine the compensation for residents to be relocated to safer areas. Following the deputy commissioner's direction, BCCL officials have been instructed to shift selected families from the most hazardous fire zones to safer locations by December 31. This move aligns with the coal secretary and CIL chairman's emphasis on early relocation of residents from danger zones. The goal is to settle 15,080 families from 81 high-risk areas by 2028, following a recent incident in which poisonous gas leakage claimed lives in the Putki Balihari Colliery Area.
