West Bengal's new BJP regime has dropped eggs from the school mid-day meal menu in Kolkata, sparking a controversy. The decision comes after eggs have been making headlines due to their use as projectiles in post-poll violence targeting TMC leaders.

The BJP had earlier dismissed claims that they would ban fish and eggs if they came to power, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah promising that the consumption of fish and eggs would not be stopped.

However, the new regime has partnered with ISKCON's Annamitra Foundation to supply cooked meals to schools in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area, with eggs not featuring in the vegetarian meals.

TMC leaders have opposed the move, with Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee arguing that removing eggs from the meal is not right, as it is an important source of protein.
