New Delhi, A former Indian Navy official, Purnendu Tiwary, remains in custody in Qatar despite a Qatari court commuting his death sentence in 2023. Official sources said the Indian government has taken up his case for pardon and the Indian embassy in Qatar has been in touch with his wife and officials have met him in jail on several occasions.

Tiwary was among eight former Navy personnel arrested by Qatari authorities on charges of espionage in 2022. While all other personnel returned to India following a Qatari court's decision, Tiwary remains in Qatar due to a separate conviction for financial irregularities.

The Indian government has denied claims made by Tiwary's family, stating that a Qatari court sentenced Tiwary in a separate case in February 2026, along with the Omani owner and another Qatari officer. The government continues to extend all possible help to Tiwary and is in touch with his family and lawyers.
