A devastating fire swept through a nightclub in Arpora, north Goa, in the early hours of Sunday, claiming 25 lives. Of the victims, four were tourists and 14 were staff members, while the identities of seven others are yet to be established. Six people have been injured and are receiving treatment. The fire, believed to have been caused by exploding LPG cylinders, broke out at Birch by Romeo Lane, a popular nightclub in the region. The blaze spread quickly through the highly combustible building, trapping many of those in the basement who succumbed to smoke inhalation. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has promised 'stringent action under the law' against the establishment, which was operating without several mandatory permissions. An inquiry has been instituted to determine the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety norms and building rules were followed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed condolences, calling for a safety audit of all clubs and restaurants, especially those with air-conditioned spaces. The investigation is ongoing, with police and fire department officials working to identify the deceased and determine the cause of the tragedy.
