A devastating fire swept through a popular Goa nightclub, Birch by Romeo Lane, in the early hours of Saturday, claiming the lives of at least 25 people. Videos from the scene reveal the extent of the destruction, with eyewitnesses describing a chaotic scene. According to officials, the fire was caused by a cylinder blast, although an investigation is ongoing. Goa's Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, confirmed that three or four tourists were among the dead, while most of the victims were staff members working in the basement. Goa MLA Michael Lobo expressed his concern about the tragedy, stating, 'I am disturbed by this incident. We will need to conduct a safety audit of all other clubs in Goa to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future.' He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of tourists and workers in these establishments. Following the disaster, authorities worked through the night to contain the situation and provide assistance to the injured and families of the deceased. A magisterial probe has been ordered, and efforts are underway to support those affected. The nightclub, which had received demolition notices from local authorities, was allowed to operate after an appeal. This incident raises concerns about safety measures in place at such establishments and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
