A devastating fire swept through Birch by Romeo Lane, a popular North Goa nightclub, early Sunday, claiming at least 25 lives and injuring six. The tragedy unfolded at midnight, leaving investigators scrambling to determine its cause. Preliminary findings suggest a combination of risk factors contributed to the disaster, including the nightclub's construction from flammable materials, narrow access routes, and restricted escape paths. While the exact spark remains unknown, a possible cylinder blast has been cited as a potential trigger. Goa's state chief minister, Pramod Sawant, revealed that the fire started on the upper floor, which, coupled with narrow and congested doors, reduced escape chances. Many victims succumbed to smoke inhalation while attempting to reach the underground area, which lacked proper ventilation. Access to the nightclub proved a significant challenge, with fire engines stationed nearly 400 meters away due to a single, narrow approach road. This delay hindered rescue efforts and containment of the blaze. Witnesses described the fire as erupting on the first floor, where approximately 100 tourists were present. Many victims, including staff members, became trapped in the kitchen or basement areas with limited exits. As the investigation continues, questions arise over the nightclub's legality, with reports suggesting it was built without a construction license. The local panchayat had issued a demolition notice, but it was stayed due to an appeal. In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Sawant has ordered a magisterial inquiry and registered an FIR against the hotel's management and owner. Arrest warrants have been issued, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured full support, announcing an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for each deceased person's family and ₹50,000 for the injured.
