Opposition leaders in Goa have slammed the state police for detaining villagers who were protesting against a mega residential project in north Goa's Carapur Sarvan.
The police action took place in Panaji, near a function marking the state's Goa Revolution Day, which commemorates a public meeting held in 1946.
Opposition leaders such as Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal also joined the protesters to demand a stop-work order to the project developers.
Kejriwal condemned the police action, saying the BJP government intends to hand over land in Carapur to builders, completely destroying the area.
Congress leader Yuri Alemao also criticized the government, saying it has become like Salazar and is crushing freedom of speech.
The detained villagers were held for some hours at the Old Goa Police Station, but no cases were registered against them.
