In a significant exercise to clean up the electoral rolls in Gujarat, over 17 lakh deceased voters were found to be still listed in the state's voter database. The revelation came to light during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, which began on November 4 and is set to conclude on December 11. As part of the SIR exercise, booth-level officers (BLOs) have been distributing enumeration forms to more than 5 crore voters registered in the 2025 electoral roll. The digitisation of returned forms is currently underway, with 12 out of 182 assembly constituencies already completed. Dang district is leading the way, with a digitisation rate of 94.35 per cent. The exercise has also revealed that over 6.14 lakh voters are absent from their addresses, while more than 30 lakh voters have permanently migrated. Additionally, over 3.25 lakh voters were found to be listed in multiple places, indicating duplication of their names. These findings highlight the need for a thorough review and update of the electoral rolls to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
