A young man from Morbi, Gujarat, has sent a video message to his family, alleging that he was captured by Ukrainian forces while fighting for the Russian military. Sahil Hussein, 22, claims he was misled into signing a contract with the Russian military while in custody for a narcotics case. In the video, he appeals for help from the Indian government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Hussein, who went to Russia two years ago to pursue computer science, said he was sentenced to seven years in jail for a crime he claims he did not commit. Believing he had no other option, he signed a contract with the Russian military while in prison. After limited training, he was sent to the war zone, where he claims he was captured by Ukrainian forces. The family has requested the Indian government's help in bringing Sahil back home. His mother, Hasinaben Majothi, has written to the Indian embassy in Ukraine and has also appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is expected to visit India in January. The Indian government has assured that it is actively working to bring back Indian citizens who have joined the Russian armed forces. The case is set to be heard in court in February, and the family hopes that diplomatic efforts will lead to Sahil's safe return to India.
