In a major crackdown, Haryana police and excise officials seized over 42,000 bottles of foreign liquor worth ₹10 crore in the black market from a Gurugram shop. The raid, led by Deputy Excise Commissioner Amit Bhatia, uncovered the largest-ever illegal liquor stock in Haryana. The seized bottles, valued between ₹5,000 and ₹1.5 lakh each, were smuggled into India without paying customs or excise duty. Officials suspect the liquor was brought in through airports using organized smuggling channels and sold to high-end customers in Gurugram. The shop, operating under a legitimate licence, was allegedly using the permit as a cover to sell large quantities of smuggled liquor. Excise officials have registered an FIR and are investigating further. The shop's owner, Surinder Singh, deposited a licence fee of ₹44 crore this year but fled the scene as soon as the raid was announced. Preliminary inquiries suggest connections between smuggling networks operating across Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan. The illicit sales have resulted in significant revenue loss for the state, with the outlet reportedly generating ₹50-60 lakh in daily sales. Excise officials warn that the illegal trade is increasingly masked under duty-free purchases and online channels, necessitating stricter enforcement across borders.
