A 58-year-old police inspector who lost his life while trying to rescue people after a swing collapsed at the Surajkund fair in Faridabad, India, had been awarded a Police Medal by the Haryana governor in 2019-2020. Jagdish Prasad, who was nearing retirement and was on-duty at the time of the incident, succumbed to his injuries after the swing tilted and collapsed around 6 pm on Saturday. At least 13 people were injured in the incident, with Prasad receiving fatal injuries while attempting to rescue those trapped. Two women constables were also injured during the rescue operation. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of visitors at the fair, with this being the third such incident in recent years. The Haryana DGP, Ajay Singhal, has announced a compensation of ₹1 crore for Prasad's family and a government job to one member of the family. The DGP praised Prasad's bravery and said that he will be honoured. An investigation into the incident is underway, with a committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner looking into the matter. Prasad's family, including his wife and three children, are in shock following his sudden demise. His family lives in a government accommodation in the Sonipat Police Lines. The incident has sparked calls for stricter safety measures at the fair, with officials saying that daily inspections are now required for installing swings. The 39th Surajkund International Craft Fair will continue on Sunday, with the swing area closed for further investigation. A case has been registered against the swing vendor, and the incident has highlighted the need for better safety protocols at public events.
