India and Canada have marked a significant shift in their security relations with the establishment of a joint work plan aimed at combating transnational threats. The plan, agreed upon during a meeting between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and his Canadian counterpart Nathalie Drouin in Ottawa, will enable the two nations to share intelligence and coordinate efforts on issues such as drug trafficking, cyber threats, and organized crime. As part of the agreement, security and law-enforcement liaison officers will be appointed to facilitate communication and information sharing between the two countries. The move is a significant step towards normalizing relations between India and Canada, which had deteriorated following a diplomatic row over the killing of a Khalistani separatist in 2023. The shared work plan will also facilitate cooperation on cybersecurity policy and information-sharing on cybersecurity issues. Additionally, the two nations will continue discussions on cooperation related to fraud and immigration enforcement. This development marks a new era of cooperation between India and Canada, with both sides working towards a common goal of enhancing national security and protecting their citizens. The move is seen as a positive step towards rebuilding trust and strengthening ties between the two nations.
