A 72-hour weather alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Himachal Pradesh, with rain and snowfall expected in the higher reaches of the state from December 20. According to Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a senior scientist at the IMD's Meteorological Centre in Shimla, the western disturbance approaching the state on December 20 will bring increased cloud cover and lead to light rain and snowfall in various districts. The IMD has predicted light rain and snowfall in Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, and Kangra's mountainous areas, with a possibility of light snowfall in Shimla, Sirmaur, and Kangra's upper areas. Mandi may witness light rain at isolated places. While rainfall chances in the plains are low, cloudiness may persist. Sharma expects weather activity across the state on December 21, which may lead to a drop in temperatures. However, temperatures are expected to return to near-normal levels from December 22 onwards as the weather clears. The next two days are expected to remain mostly clear, with scattered light snowfall and rain possible in Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti's higher reaches by late Friday night. Cloudy conditions will prevail in the plains, with light rain possible in parts of Mandi and Kullu districts.
