Congress leader P Chidambaram has criticized the government's increasing practice of using Hindi words in bill titles, calling it an 'affront' to non-Hindi-speaking people. Chidambaram argues that this change, which was recently introduced, makes it difficult for those who don't speak Hindi to understand and identify bills. He points out that bills were previously translated into both English and Hindi, but now the Hindi titles are written in English letters, making them hard to pronounce and identify. The former Union minister expressed concerns that this change may be an attempt to undermine the status of English as an associate official language. He warned that successive governments' promises to maintain English as an associate official language may be at risk of being broken. Chidambaram's comments come as the government prepares to introduce new bills in Parliament, including the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, which has already sparked controversy.
