The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has directed entities handling 2-Bromo-4-Methylpropiophenone, a chemical used to manufacture mephedrone, to register under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) framework.

The move comes after the chemical was added to the list of controlled substances due to its misuse by drug cartels.

The NCB has asked entities to submit registration applications by August 7 and furnish details of their stock holdings by July 10, 2026.

The Union home ministry and central anti-narcotics agencies are working on a three-year action plan to target domestic drug cartels and overseas fugitives.
