India has welcomed the Iran-US peace deal, hoping it will bring peace to West Asia and ensure freedom of navigation and commerce.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for the agreement, which will be signed on June 19 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The deal will end the US blockade of Iranian ports and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route.

India, the world's third-largest oil importer, had been hit hard by the war that began on February 28, especially Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

New Delhi has consistently called for a return to dialogue and diplomacy to end the hostilities and backed efforts to ensure unimpeded flows of energy and goods.

The peace deal was mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, and thousands of people were killed in the conflict, mostly in Iran and Lebanon.
