In response to reports suggesting that some eggs may contain antibiotics, the Karnataka state government has initiated a comprehensive testing program to ensure the safety and quality of eggs sold in the state. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao announced the move on Monday, emphasizing the need for scientific testing to address any doubts about egg quality. The health department has begun collecting egg samples from markets across Karnataka, including branded products, and has sent them for laboratory analysis. Officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) have also intensified inspections and sample collection, focusing initially on the Greater Bengaluru Area. Rao noted that eggs are generally considered a healthy food, but emphasized the importance of testing to confirm their quality. He pointed to the results of earlier testing, where out of 125 samples collected in September and October last year, only one was found to be problematic. The safety and authenticity of the eggs are expected to be confirmed within 14 days, after the test reports are received. Over 150 egg samples have been collected across Karnataka, with approximately 50 samples taken from Bengaluru alone. Sampling has been carried out in various locations within the city, including RR Nagar, Kengeri, and Koramangala. If any irregularities are detected, authorities plan to expand sample collection to other districts across the state and test additional egg brands. The government aims to reassure consumers about the safety of eggs sold in the state and make the findings public once the laboratory reports are available.
