Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan has cautioned India to be prepared for two types of conflicts: short-term, high-intensity battles to deter terrorism, and long-duration land wars due to territorial disputes with neighboring countries. While speaking at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Gen Chauhan emphasized that India's adversaries, who possess nuclear capabilities, should not be underestimated. He hinted at Pakistan and China, without directly naming them, citing ongoing land disputes. To counter these threats, Gen Chauhan stressed the need for India to be equipped for short-duration, high-intensity conflicts, similar to Operation Sindoor, and long-duration land wars. He also highlighted the importance of avoiding such conflicts whenever possible. Gen Chauhan pointed out that modern warfare is on the cusp of a third revolution in military affairs, driven by the convergence of various technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and hypersonic systems. He predicted that multi-domain operations will become essential, as one domain's actions will increasingly impact others. The CDS cited Operation Sindoor as an example of this convergence, where all domains of warfare were simultaneously used to achieve a decisive victory in a short war. He emphasized the need for extensive coordination and control between different military branches, including cyber, space, and cognitive forces, to succeed in future multi-domain operations.
