The Indian Army is poised to acquire 850 kamikaze drones, valued at ₹2,000 crore, as part of a major modernization push. According to sources, the deal is expected to be cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council in the coming weeks. The Army plans to equip its infantry battalions with these drones, which will be operated by specialized Ashni platoons. This move comes after the Army's successful use of drones during Operation Sindoor, where they targeted terror headquarters inside Pakistan, resulting in significant damage and high enemy casualties. The Army aims to induct 30,000 loitering munitions in the near future to enhance its counterinsurgency capabilities and protect its borders.
