India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with Iran's top security official, Ghadir Nezamipour, on the sidelines of the Brics NSAs' meeting. The two reviewed the situation in West Asia and discussed cooperation under the Brics platform and India-Iran relations.
The meeting comes after Iran and the US finalized an understanding on de-escalation in the region, marking the first such contact between the two sides since the agreement.
Nezamipour's visit to New Delhi is significant, as it is the first time a senior Iranian official has traveled to the city since Iran and the US signed a 14-point memorandum of understanding on June 17.
The Indian side has been closely following the developments, which will have a bearing on several crucial issues, including the removal of US sanctions and the future of New Delhi's involvement in developing Chabahar port.
Iran is also expected to send its petroleum minister and a deputy energy minister to the Brics energy ministers' meeting being hosted by India in Gurugram during June 25-26.
Meanwhile, Doval also met with the executive director of analysis of Ethiopia's National Intelligence and Security Service, Million Lema Tadesse, to explore areas of cooperation and deepen the India-Ethiopia strategic partnership.
