In a scathing criticism of the quick-commerce industry, AAP MP Raghav Chadha has called for regulations to protect the rights of gig workers. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Chadha stressed that these workers face perilous conditions, with their lives often at risk due to the pressure of meeting tight delivery deadlines. "The Indian economy runs on the invisible wheels of gig workers," Chadha said, highlighting the plight of delivery personnel, drivers, and service providers who work for companies like Zomato, Swiggy, Ola, and Uber. Despite being the backbone of the industry, these workers are often treated as second-class citizens, lacking formal employment status and basic benefits like health insurance. "The tyranny of speed" is a major concern, Chadha argued, pointing to the growing trend of 10-minute delivery. This pressure can lead to reckless driving, accidents, and even fatalities. Gig workers also face the wrath of customers who threaten to file complaints and give poor ratings, which can have a devastating impact on their livelihoods. "These are not robots, but human beings with families and loved ones," Chadha said, urging the government to take action to protect the rights of gig workers. He called for regulations to ensure that these workers receive fair treatment, humane working conditions, and access to basic benefits. The Indian government has been working on labor codes that aim to provide better protection to gig workers. However, Chadha's comments highlight the urgent need for more comprehensive regulations to address the exploitation of these workers.
