Indian AI firm Sarvam AI has raised $234 million in funding, aiming to challenge Chinese and US rivals with its models trained from scratch in India.
The startup's models work across 22 Indian languages and can be accessed through voice commands, giving it a competitive edge.
Sarvam AI has secured a valuation of $1.5 billion, with investments from HCLTech, Bessemer Venture Partners, and existing investors.
Co-founder Pratyush Kumar said the company aims to build frontier-class AI systems from India, prioritizing sovereign AI to reduce dependence on US and Chinese platforms.
