India and the United States have joined forces to demand stricter sanctions against Pakistan-based terror organizations, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), as well as affiliates of Islamic State and al-Qaeda. The two nations made this call during a counter-terrorism meeting in New Delhi, seeking designations under the UN Security Council's 1267 sanctions regime. This would impose a global asset freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo on these groups. The move underscores the growing cooperation between India and the US in combating terrorism. India expressed gratitude to the US for designating The Resistance Front (TRF), a LeT proxy, as a foreign terrorist organization. The TRF was responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack in April. Both nations strongly condemned the Pahalgam attack and the Red Fort incident in New Delhi, emphasizing that those responsible for terrorism must be held accountable. They expressed concern over the increasing use of drones and AI for terrorist purposes and reiterated their commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation against terrorism. The meetings also covered ways to enhance cooperation against emerging threats, including terrorist recruitment, technology abuse, and financing. India and the US discussed strengthening law enforcement and judicial cooperation, including mutual legal assistance requests. The India-US meetings were followed by a Quad counter-terrorism working group meeting, which brought together officials from India, Australia, Japan, and the US. The group called for bringing to justice the perpetrators of the Red Fort incident and urged UN member states to cooperate. The Quad partners condemned all forms of terrorism, including cross-border terrorism, and emphasized the importance of keeping the Indo-Pacific region open and free from terrorist threats. A tabletop exercise on counter-terrorism operations in urban environments was also conducted, providing an opportunity for experts to share best practices and identify potential joint operational preparedness to respond to complex terrorist scenarios.
