India's largest airline, IndiGo, is facing a major crisis after canceling over 1,000 flights in just three days, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded. The disruptions began on Tuesday and have continued to escalate, with queues forming outside IndiGo counters at several airports. On Friday, Delhi's IGI airport reported 135 cancellations, while Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports saw 100 and 92 cancellations, respectively. This comes after a chaotic Thursday, where over 400 flights were cancelled, with the airline citing 'misjudgment and planning gaps' as the reason. The airline has apologized for the disruptions and has assured that it is working to restore normalcy. However, with 200 flights cancelled at Delhi's IGI airport on Friday alone, the situation remains grim. IndiGo has also sought relief from rules limiting pilot duty hours at night, citing the need for more crew members. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has found that IndiGo had 'inadequate' passenger-handling staff, contributing to the chaos. The airline has requested time till February 10, 2026, to fully stabilize its operations, with more cancellations expected in the coming days. The disruptions have led to a significant decline in IndiGo's on-time performance, with a score of 19.7% on Wednesday, down from 35% on Tuesday. The airline's schedule stabilisation efforts are expected to begin from December 8, but for now, thousands of passengers remain stranded, awaiting news of when normal operations will resume.
