The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has exited the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) in Tamil Nadu, citing its association with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) after the state assembly elections.

The IUML, a longtime ally of the DMK, passed 14 resolutions at its general council meeting in Chennai, including the discontinuation of its association with the DMK-led alliance.

According to IUML president K M Khader Mohideen, his party decided to support the TVK to prevent President's Rule in Tamil Nadu, despite having won victories only within the DMK alliance so far.

TVK won 108 assembly segments but fell short of the mandatory 118 seats required to form the government, drawing support from the Congress, CPI, CPI (M), and VCK, among others.

Responding to the development, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said the IUML's decision to withdraw from the alliance was not a surprise, given their recent association with the TVK.
