The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has formally exited the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) after aligning with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu.

At a general council meeting in Chennai, IUML passed 14 resolutions, including the discontinuation of its association with the DMK-led SPA.

The IUML had extended its support to the TVK to form the government after the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, and currently, it is part of the government led by C Joseph Vijay.

IUML president KM Khader Mohideen said that the party could not continue its journey in the DMK alliance given the current political climate.

The IUML had contested in two constituencies under the DMK-led SPA and won in both, with two of its members finding a place in the Tamil Nadu state assembly.

The party had been with the DMK-led alliance for over 60 years and had achieved victories only within the alliance.

However, IUML decided to support the TVK without any conditions to ensure that the President's rule did not get imposed in the state.

TVK won in 108 assembly segments but fell short of the mandatory 118 seats required to form the government.

DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said that the IUML had already withdrawn from the alliance and joined the TVK government, and it was not going to help them.
