Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is set to embark on a significant diplomatic visit to the University of Oxford and the World Economic Forum in Davos. The trip, scheduled for January, aims to foster closer ties between the state and prestigious institutions, including St John's College and the Blavatnik School of Government. Soren will lead a high-level delegation from the Jharkhand government to the UK, building on the state's participation in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos from January 18 to 24. During his visit to Oxford, the Chief Minister will engage with academic institutions, deliver a special lecture, and participate in a discussion at the Blavatnik School of Government. This engagement is part of a broader effort to position Jharkhand as a leader in inclusive development, education, and institutional capacity. The state's visit to Oxford holds special significance, as it marks a continuation of an unfinished project initiated by Jaipal Singh Munda, an Adivasi leader from Jharkhand who studied at St John's College in 1922. Munda's exceptional journey to Oxford, despite facing significant barriers as an indigenous student, paved the way for future generations. His legacy is remembered in Jharkhand, where he is revered as Marang Gomke, the great leader. The state has established scholarships in his name to provide access to international education for students from Scheduled Tribes and other marginalized communities. The Chief Minister's visit to Oxford is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Jharkhand's ties with global institutions, promote education, leadership, and institutional capacity, and create opportunities for talent from the state to engage with international centers of learning. As Jharkhand marks 25 years of statehood, this visit signals a clear commitment to building a brighter future through education, capability, and access to global knowledge networks.
