Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has revealed that justice may have a blind eye, but it has an excellent sense of humour. Speaking at the book launch event of solicitor general Tushar Mehta, the CJI said that behind every judgment are human beings with their own flaws and bursts of comic brilliance.

The CJI referred to the two books – ‘The Bench, the Bar and the Bizarre: The Curious and the Extraordinary in Law’ and ‘The Lawful and the Awful: Quirky Tales from the World of Law’ – and said that the courtroom is where theatre meets law. He added that humour in the courtroom is not mockery but education.

The CJI lightened the mood by sharing anecdotes from the Indian courts, asking the solicitor general to consider bringing out a third edition focussed on Indian judiciary. He appreciated the books for its depth of research which elevates the collection of anecdotes into an ‘engaging narrative’.
