Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has responded to criticism from his Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan over the demolition of makeshift shelters in Bengaluru's Kogila Layout. In a social media post, Siddaramaiah explained that the area is not suitable for human habitation and that several families had failed to comply with eviction notices. Despite criticism from Vijayan, who accused the Karnataka government of 'bulldozer raj', Siddaramaiah emphasized that the demolition was a lawful removal of illegal encroachments. He also assured that the government will provide temporary shelter and essentials to the displaced families, including migrant workers. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar echoed Siddaramaiah's stance, stating that the area in question is a solid waste disposal site and that the government will not allow land mafia to build slums. He also accused Vijayan of interfering in Karnataka's affairs without knowing the truth. The situation has sparked a heated debate, with CPI(M) leader AA Rahim labeling the Karnataka government's actions as 'anti-minority'. A delegation led by Rahim visited Kogila Layout on Saturday to meet with displaced families and assess the situation. The controversy highlights the complexities of urban development and the need for a balance between law enforcement and humanitarian concerns. As the debate continues, the Karnataka government remains committed to ensuring that the displaced families receive support and assistance.
