Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka has written to Speaker U T Khader, requesting an additional week for the ongoing winter session of the Karnataka state legislature. The current session, which began in Belagavi on December 8, is set to conclude on December 19. Ashoka argued that several pressing issues affecting the state remain undiscussed and unresolved. In his letter, he pointed out that the session has been shortened by two days, and many bills are yet to be taken up for discussion or passage. The debate over North Karnataka's development has been a key focus of the session, with discussions centered around the recent farmer agitation over crop prices. However, low attendance by legislators has persisted, with only about 50 members present in the 224-member House on December 15. The ruling Congress party holds 135 seats in the Assembly, excluding the two members who passed away. Ashoka's request for an extended session raises questions about the effectiveness of holding the session in Belagavi, particularly when the objective is to focus on issues specific to North Karnataka. A prolonged session could allow for further discussion and legislative attention on the state's pressing issues. The Speaker's decision on Ashoka's request will be closely watched, as it may impact the state legislature's ability to address matters of public importance.
