A heated exchange erupted in the Lok Sabha on Friday between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the controversy surrounding the Karthigai Deepam at the Arulmigu Subramania Swamy temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The row began when DMK MP TR Baalu made a comment criticizing a Madras High Court judge who had allowed devotees to light the traditional lamp, a decision opposed by the Tamil Nadu government. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju strongly objected, stating that the remark undermined the judiciary. Rijiju reminded the House that parliamentary debates must maintain decorum and adhere to rules. He warned Baalu that his remark could lead to unnecessary trouble for both him and his party. However, Baalu stood by his statement, citing the judge's alleged association with an organization. The judge's remarks are currently under review, with contempt of court charges pending. At the heart of the issue is the long-standing tradition of lighting the Karthigai Deepam atop an ancient stone pillar in Madurai. A court order on December 1 allowed devotees to light the lamp, but the Tamil Nadu government and temple authorities refused to comply, citing concerns over communal tensions. Clashes erupted between Hindu organizations and police personnel on December 3, with accusations of contempt of court being considered. The issue has become a political flashpoint, with Baalu accusing a particular group of inflaming the situation. Union Minister L Murugan responded on behalf of the government, accusing the DMK-led state government of religious discrimination. He claimed that the state government is targeting a particular community and obstructing worshippers, and that their actions are driven by vote-bank politics. The controversy has sparked a debate on the role of the judiciary and the government's handling of the situation. The matter remains under review, with the Lok Sabha continuing to address the issue.
