Kochi, Kerala has launched a special drive to protect native freshwater fish species during the southwest monsoon, a crucial period in their life cycle.

The Fisheries Department has intensified patrolling in areas where illegal fishing activities have been reported, particularly in rivers, streams, and paddy fields where fish migrate for breeding.

According to officials, many fish caught during this period are carrying eggs or are young fish that have not yet matured, and their capture can significantly affect fish populations and threaten the long-term sustainability of inland fisheries.

The department has warned that installing trap nets and illegal fish traps in waterways can prevent fish from reaching breeding areas and result in large numbers being caught during their migration.

Under the Kerala Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2010, catching breeding fish or juvenile fish is a punishable offence, and violators can face fines, imprisonment, or both.
