Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala - The state is set to host the Labour Conclave 2025 on December 19, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurating the event. The conclave aims to formulate alternative policies to protect workers' and states' interests within the federal framework, as per state Labour Minister V Sivankutty. Sivankutty described the Centre's newly introduced labour codes as "anti-worker" and a "violation of federal principles." He alleged that several provisions undermine workers' rights and erode the powers of the states. The conclave will bring together labour ministers from various states, including Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and Telangana, to coordinate their opposition to the labour laws. The event will feature two technical sessions, including a keynote address by former Supreme Court judge Justice Gopala Gowda. Representatives of central trade unions opposing the labour codes are expected to meet Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and submit a memorandum reflecting their demands. The state government has reiterated its commitment to protecting workers' interests while implementing the new labour codes, which include universal social security coverage for gig workers, mandatory appointment letters, and statutory minimum wages. The conclave will conclude with a policy declaration aimed at safeguarding Kerala's interests.
