Kerala's first phase of local body polls kicked off on a high note on Tuesday, with seven districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Ernakulam, witnessing a significant voter turnout. By 9:30 am, over 14.5% of the electorate had cast their ballots, according to the State Election Commission. Citizens from all walks of life, including celebrities Asif Ali and Renji Panicker, were spotted waiting in queues to exercise their franchise early in the morning. The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) expressed confidence in a historic win, citing a strong anti-incumbency sentiment and controversies surrounding the Sabarimala gold issue, which they believe have hurt the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). The LDF, led by the CPI(M), remains optimistic about a strong performance, relying on its record of development projects and welfare initiatives to secure voter support. The BJP is campaigning aggressively, emphasizing religious issues, including the administration of the Sabarimala temple. The second phase of voting will take place on December 11, covering eight more districts. With over 1.32 crore voters eligible to decide the fate of 75,632 candidates, the results for all 1,199 local bodies are expected on December 13.
