In a shocking case of insurance fraud, a 35-year-old man from Latur, Maharashtra, has been arrested for allegedly murdering a 50-year-old man to claim a ₹1 crore life insurance payout. The motive behind the crime was a crippling debt of ₹57 lakhs. According to the police, the victim, identified as Ganesh Chavan, had taken an insurance policy three years ago, hoping to secure his family's future. However, his financial woes, which included a ₹57 lakh debt, took a toll on him. On December 13, Chavan allegedly murdered Govind Kishan Yadav, a 50-year-old man who had asked for a lift, and then staged a car fire to make it seem like he had died. The police were initially misled into believing that the charred body in the car was Chavan's. However, further investigation revealed that Chavan was alive and had been hiding in Sindhudurg. The police found that he had picked up Yadav, who was drunk, and then deliberately set the car on fire to claim the insurance money. The police have charged Chavan with murder, destruction of property, and destruction of evidence. The case highlights the desperate measures people may take to escape financial difficulties, and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such crimes.
