In a significant development, the prosecution in the 2017 actress assault case is set to seek life imprisonment for the six individuals found guilty by the court. The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Judge, Honey M Varghese, had delivered the guilty verdict on December 8, convicting Sunil alias Pulsar Suni, Martin Antony, Manikandan B, Vijesh V P, Salim H, and Pradeep. The court had acquitted actor Dileep and three others in the case. According to the prosecution's lead counsel, V Aja Kumar, the convicted individuals may face life imprisonment for three charges: rape, conspiracy, and abetment. Kumar stated that the prosecution will push for the maximum possible punishment, citing the evidence presented during the trial. The court had found the six individuals guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act, including criminal conspiracy, wrongful confinement, and gang rape. The prosecution is awaiting a copy of the judgment to understand the reasoning behind Dileep's acquittal. The Kerala High Court may soon see an appeal from the prosecution challenging Dileep's acquittal. Kumar confirmed that preparations for the appeal have already begun, with a personal review of the judgment copy to be received soon. The actress assault case, which involved a multi-lingual actress being held captive for two hours in February 2017, sent shockwaves through Kerala society.
