The recent killing of six Nagas in Manipur has sparked fears of a return to the civil war between the state's two Christian communities that plagued the 1990s. The violence, which began with the kidnapping of 28 Kukis and 20 Nagas in May, has resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals from both communities.

The current crisis is reminiscent of the 1990s, when Nagas and Kukis clashed over land, resulting in over 1,450 deaths. However, experts say that the situation is more complex now, with factors such as illegal influx, demographic imbalance, and land acquisition contributing to the tensions.

Two apex Kuki Zo bodies have been demanding a separate administration in the form of a Union territory since the beginning of Meitei-Kuki clashes in May 2023. They believe the ongoing friction with the Nagas only reaffirms the legitimacy of their demand.

As the situation continues to escalate, the government has been called upon to intervene and provide immediate justice to the victims and their families.
