Meghalaya's Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai has pledged unwavering support to the Sikh residents of Punjabi Lane in Shillong. The assurance came after a meeting with Acting Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar. Giani Gargajj, who is visiting Shillong for the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, had requested the state government's backing to safeguard the rights of the Sikh community. Shullai emphasized that the government stands with the Sikh community, citing their historic values of truth and justice. The Acting Jathedar had earlier participated in a 'nagar kirtan' procession from Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha and addressed a large congregation at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar. He recalled Guru Tegh Bahadur's sacrifice and urged the Sikh community to remain rooted in their teachings. The Jathedar also expressed concerns over potential displacement of Sikh families in Punjabi Lane, stating that it would be unjust. He encouraged the community to preserve their heritage by teaching Punjabi and Gurmukhi to children. The gurdwara management committee honored Giani Gargajj for his visit, and he felicitated several Sikh personalities for their contributions to the community. The event was attended by senior Sikh leaders and a large number of devotees from across Meghalaya, Assam, and the Northeast.
