The Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan has called for 'urgent steps' to improve campus life and student engagement at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Kurukshetra, following a series of student suicides.

Pradhan chaired a high-level review meeting, outlining reforms for student well-being across all higher educational institutions (HEIs), including 'campus vibrancy' and stronger systems for student mentoring, innovation and faculty accountability.

Immediate steps include hostel upgrades, a faculty training programme on mentoring and well-being, and standard operating procedures to institutionalise student engagement.

Medium-term measures cover improving sports infrastructure, capacity-building for administrators, and structured alumni interactions to promote a 'can-do' culture.

The ministry has also announced interventions for all higher education institutions, including setting up an 'apex committee on campus culture' and developing an overarching framework to address academic and infrastructure gaps.
