Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump are set to meet on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, amidst growing trade tensions and concerns over the Iran war.
The meeting, announced by White House officials, comes at a time when India-US ties have been strained following the killing of three Indian seafarers in a US strike on a Palau-flagged tanker in the waters off Oman.
Modi is on a nearly week-long visit to France and Slovakia, where he will hold bilateral talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and meet Slovak business leaders.
The agenda for the Modi-Trump meeting is expected to include a review of progress on the trade deal, potential fresh announcements on the defence front, and discussions on the Iran war.
India is likely to seek greater clarity on the trade deal and Washington's plans for the Iran war, while the US is expected to stress the need for commercial vessels to comply with orders from US forces.
The meeting will be the first between the two leaders since Modi travelled to Washington in February, and comes at a moment of lingering strains in the relationship.
