The Odisha government has launched a new initiative, 'Mukhyamantri Kanya Bibaha Yojana,' to support low-income women in the state with their wedding expenses. Under the scheme, eligible women will receive ₹51,000, including ₹35,000 directly transferred to their bank accounts, ₹10,000 for a wedding gift kit, and ₹6,000 for event support. The scheme aims to ensure that marriages in poor families are conducted with dignity and respect for cultural traditions. To be eligible, the bride and groom must be permanent residents of Odisha, between 18-35 years and 21-35 years old respectively. Priority will be given to widows, persons with disabilities, and individuals from Scheduled Tribes and Castes. The scheme will be effective from 2025-2026 to 2029-2030, with eligible couples required to submit physical applications to designated district-level agencies. The authorities will ensure that ceremonies adhere to cultural practices and follow all legal norms. The Odisha government has a history of supporting women's empowerment initiatives, including the Subhadra Yojana, which provided ₹50,000 to women over five years. The new scheme is a significant step towards ensuring that low-income women can marry with dignity and respect.
