A 90% burn victim, an undergraduate student, is fighting for her life in Odisha's Ispat General Hospital after allegedly setting herself ablaze in Sundergarh district on Friday night. The incident marks the fifth such case in the state within the past six months. Police have arrested a 25-year-old man accused of harassing the victim, who was studying when her family members were asleep. The victim's mother revealed that her daughter had received a threatening call before the incident, which prompted her to take drastic action. This disturbing trend of self-immolation has been reported in Odisha since July, with five tragic incidents leaving at least four people dead. The latest case is linked to alleged harassment by a professor, who was jailed along with three others. In a similar case in August, a 20-year-old undergraduate student died after being blackmailed by her male friend, who was later arrested. Another minor girl died in August after allegedly setting herself ablaze, and a 13-year-old schoolgirl took her own life in a field in Bargarh district. As authorities investigate the latest incident, concerns are being raised about the increasing number of self-immolation cases in Odisha. The police and government must take immediate action to address the root causes of these desperate acts and ensure the safety and well-being of the state's students.
