A 25-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the attempted self-immolation of an 18-year-old college student in Odisha's Sundargarh district. The student, who suffered over 90% burn injuries, is fighting for life in Rourkela's Ispat General Hospital. According to police, the student had a dispute with her male friend, who had been stalking and harassing her for the past two years. The accused, Nilesh Sahu, had allegedly intensified his actions in recent times. The student's mother revealed that her daughter had been studying in her room when she received a phone call, leading to the tragic incident. Police have recorded statements from family members, neighbors, and witnesses, and are awaiting the survivor's statement once her medical condition improves. This incident is part of a disturbing trend in Odisha, where at least 7 women, including two minors, have set themselves ablaze in the past month due to personal despair, societal pressures, and systemic failures. The cases include a 20-year-old student who died after setting herself on fire on campus, citing inaction by authorities on her sexual harassment complaint, and a 19-year-old college student who immolated herself after her ex-boyfriend threatened to leak intimate photos online.
