A heated protest turned violent in Odisha on Saturday as Youth Congress workers clashed with police, hurling eggs and attempting to gherao the residence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. The demonstration, led by state president Ranjit Patra, was sparked by the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old college student at Dhauli hills near Bhubaneswar on December 10. The protesters, who carried posters and banners, marched towards the CM's official residence to demand his resignation, accusing him of failing to protect girls and women in the state. However, police personnel intervened, leading to a scuffle and the use of eggs as a form of protest. Several Youth Congress activists were detained, and the police dispersed the crowd. Youth Congress leader Syed Yashir Nawaz criticized the law and order situation in Odisha, citing two recent incidents of gang rape in the state. In response, BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal maintained that the state government is committed to taking legal action against those who break the law, pointing to the arrest and charges filed against the accused in the Dhauli incident. Biswal also suggested that the Congress is diverting attention from internal party issues.
