Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar has confirmed that rival factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will jointly contest the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation elections. This marks the first instance in Maharashtra where the divided party has agreed to fight together after a split. The decision is seen as a significant step towards reunification within the Pawar family and the party. Ajit Pawar announced the tie-up on Sunday, but refrained from disclosing the seat-sharing arrangement between the two factions. This has left rival parties waiting for clarity on the NCP's candidate list, with the nomination deadline fast approaching. In a statement, Pawar acknowledged the suspense, saying the opposition is watching the NCP's move, but his party is also monitoring the rival parties' candidate list. The reunification of the Pawar family is a significant development in Maharashtra politics. Ajit Pawar struck a confident tone while recalling his long association with the industrial township of Pimpri-Chinchwad. He urged party workers to stay alert, targeting the opposition for pushing the city into debt. The NCP has a proven development record in the city, which it aims to leverage in the January 15 civic elections. Sources indicate that the Pune Municipal Corporation elections are also on the radar, with both NCP factions engaged in seat-sharing talks. The discussions have stalled, but the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) has returned to the negotiating table with its Maha Vikas Aghadi partners. However, the party skipped alliance talks with its allies on Sunday, sparking speculation about possible realignments at the civic level.
