Indira Lankesh, a renowned writer, publisher, and entrepreneur, passed away at her residence in Bengaluru on Monday at the age of 83. Her family revealed that she died in her sleep due to age-related ailments.
Indira Lankesh was a multifaceted personality who defied easy definition. She was a successful entrepreneur who built a saree business from scratch, a memoirist whose account of her family life became an important work in Kannada literature, and a publisher who helped sustain a prominent journalistic venture.
Born on June 2, 1943, in Shivamogga, Indira married writer and journalist P. Lankesh in 1960. After settling in Bengaluru, she began selling sarees from home before opening Mayur Silks and Textiles in 1979. Her husband founded Lankesh Patrike, a Kannada tabloid, the following year, and she was closely involved in its administration and publishing operations.
Indira's literary contribution was expressed in her autobiographical work, Hulimavu Mattu Nanu, which was serialised in Gauri Lankesh Patrike. Her work often unfolded away from public attention, but her legacy will be remembered for generations to come.
