Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day visit to Assam, beginning Saturday, where he will unveil new infrastructure projects, pay homage to martyrs, and engage with locals. The highlight of his visit is the inauguration of the ₹4,000 crore new terminal of the Guwahati airport, touted as a major boost to Assam's growth engine. During his visit, Modi will also pay respects to the 860 martyrs of the Assam movement, a six-year-long anti-foreigner agitation that began in 1979. The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for the ₹12,000 crore Ammonia-Urea Fertiliser Project in Namrup, which is expected to meet the state's fertiliser requirements and reduce imports. Modi's visit will also see him unveil an 80-foot-tall statue of Assam's first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, and address public meetings in Guwahati and Namrup. The Prime Minister will interact with meritorious students and party workers, and engage in a road show. His visit is seen as a significant step towards boosting Assam's growth and development, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailing it as a 'historic occasion'.
